VOICE calls for your support on GE Maize ban in EU

23 November 2007

EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas is for the first time proposing a ban for the cultivation of two genetically engineered maize varieties because of the long-term risks they pose to the environment and biodiversity. Dimas could go before the Commission seeking consent for a final decision within the next few weeks. While the proposal of the Commissioner in charge is usually approved by the other Commissioners, in this case they might take a different vote due to intensive lobbying of the GE-industry.

At this critical stage it is necessary to take action! Civil society and citizens should have their say to be heard by Commissioners. VOICE actively supports the EU-wide ban on GE maize and has urged our national Commissioner Charlie McCreevy to do so.

What’s at stake?

Dimas’s draft indicates a high level of uncertainty related to the two types of GE maize -"BT 11" (Syngenta) and "1507" (Dupont /Pioneer)- which are insect-resistant. The arguments are based on clear scientific evidence, assessing that they may also be toxic to other beneficial insects and have long term effects on soil health.

If the proposal is overruled, these two types of GE maize would be the first GE maize varieties to be approved for cultivation within the European Union since 1998.

If Commissioner Dimas prevails, this would be an important precedent for the future of GE legislation within the European Union. Indeed, considerations based on the precautionary principle could effectively be taken into account.

Voice supports the Greenpeace campaign, you can take action too

Around 60,000 EU citizens have already taken part in this campaign, but only 200 Irish people so far. We need your support. Take your chance to express your views on this matter!
