As VOICE, we are deeply committed to addressing one of the most critical Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production.

Lyndsey O'Connell

With over 25 years of expertise in waste prevention and the circular economy, we understand the urgent need for Ireland to make significant progress in this area.

Last month, we witnessed the hottest June on record globally. Land and sea temperatures soared, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by a substantial margin. These alarming findings from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service serve as a stark reminder of the climate crisis we are facing.

Unsustainable patterns of consumption and production lie at the root of the triple planetary crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

How can Ireland confront these problems head-on?

To confront these challenges head-on, Ireland must develop a robust and ambitious National Waste Management Plan for a Circular Economy. This plan is not only crucial for meeting our EU targets but also for steering Ireland towards a sustainable path that benefits both present and future generations.

At VOICE, we firmly believe in the power of a comprehensive and ambitious waste management plan. It presents numerous opportunities to reduce Ireland's carbon emissions and combat climate change. By prioritizing waste prevention, promoting reuse and repair initiatives, and implementing effective collection systems, we can minimize resource extraction, manufacturing, and energy-intensive processes associated with single-use products.

Why is our feedback so important?

Our submission, which focuses on the current draft plan, emphasizes the need for greater ambition and stronger measures.

We urge for a plan that aligns Ireland's waste management practices with circular economy principles, ensuring a significant reduction in our carbon footprint.

By embracing circularity, we have an opportunity to lead the way in creating a greener and more sustainable future for our nation.

Now is the time for action. Let us join forces to support a robust and ambitious National Waste Management Plan that sets Ireland on a transformative path towards a circular economy.

Together, we can make a real difference in addressing the urgent challenges of the climate crisis and building a more sustainable and resilient future.
